College of Pharmacy of the City of New York
1829 - 1976
At the time of its founding in1829, The College of Pharmacy (originally named The New York College of Pharmacy) was one of two colleges of pharmacy in the United States. With support from physicians, apothecaries and wholesale drug merchants for the education of apprentices, the college opened first on Barclay Street in Lower Manhattan and then over the next fifty years operated out of different temporary locations. In 1878, the college purchased a building on East 23rd Street, where it remained until 1894 when it moved to newly constructed facilities uptown on West 68th Street. In 1904, the college became affiliated with what would be officially known by 1912 as Columbia University. Under the terms of incorporation, the college's academic programming fell under the supervision of the Columbia University Council while its finances were placed under the control of the College of Pharmacy's Board of Trustees. In 1966 the college was renamed the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Under pressure from ongoing financial problems and unable to meet the requirements set by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education, the college was placed on probation in 1967 and eventually closed its doors in 1976.
