St. Paul's Roman Catholic School

1886? - 1974

In 1886, the missionary priests of St. Paul the Apostle Church founded St. Paul's School, an elementary school, on West 60th Street. The school added a secondary division in 1922 and operated until the 1970s, when financial issues forced the Archdiocese of New York to close its doors. In the1960s and 1970s, St. Paul's established pre-school centers funded by Project Head Start under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. As part of the project, Montessori and kindergarten classes sponsored by the school provided students with free lunches and medical and dental care. In addition to pre-school programming, St. Paul's offered after-school services funded by the antipoverty program of the Archdiocese of New York and managed by the Sisters of Charity. In relation to the development of Lincoln Center, a well supported urban renewal project, the church sold off 70 percent of its property, including the school, and sold it to private developers to build middle-income apartments, office spaces, and retail stores.
