Riverside Library

1894 - ?

The Riverside Library developed from a small lending library established in 1894 by the Riverside Association. It operated for three years out of a small room located at 259 West 59th when it was absorbed by the New York Free Circulating Library (NYFCL). Established in 1878, the NYFCL oversaw the operation of eleven branch libraries until 1901 when its libraries were consolidated with The New York Public Library (NYPL). In 1897, the NYFCL relocated the Riverside Library to 261 West 69th Street where it became the first library to use an open shelf system. In 1905, with funding from Andrew Carnegie, the NYPL constructed a new site for the branch at 190 Amsterdam Avenue. In 1992, the library was relocated to 127 Amsterdam Avenue.
