Kingsbridge Heights Community Center
c. 1973 - present
The 1960s to the 1980s were a turbulent time for the Bronx. Crime rates were high, and white flight had occurred in a major way in previous decades, taking what little money was in the Bronx with them. In an effort to focus on community and emphasize pillars of community and trust, and Foster a neighborhood that could rely on itself, three women from the community came forward to build a community center. The center began as a former police precinct. When the police needed to move to a larger building, instead of leaving the building vacant, these women campaigned their Borough president for the option to create something new within the walls. Thus, the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center was born. Today, the center offers Family Support, nutritional support for its residents, and support to K-12 students, all the way up to the age of 25.
