Fort Hamilton High School

September 08, 1941 - present

Fort Hamilton High School began construction on the former site of the Crescent Athletic Club in 1940. It was designed to be coeducational and accommodate 3,000 students, with hopes of easing overcrowding of nearby Bay Ridge and New Utrecht high schools. Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia laid the cornerstone at a ceremony on September 23, 1940. Fort Hamilton High School was opened on September 8, 1941 at the beginning of the fall semester. The school was designed in the shape of a capital "H," featuring a red brick facade and open recessed courts to the north and south. Notable alumni include Janet Yellen, former Treasury Secretary of the United States. By 2016, the school hosted more than 4,600 students, 60 clubs, and 32 sports teams.
