Greenwich House

November 27, 1902 - present

The initial purpose of the Greenwich House was to be a social establishment for newly immigrated individuals to New York City. Founded in 1902 and its initial mission was to aid in decreasing the infant mortality rate in the Greenwich Village during this period. The Greenwich Village house served as a location for people to reside in the helping of the overcrowding in Greenwich Village at the time. The founder and first director, Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch, assisted in several aspects of the Greenwich House. This included helping the aid in the development of adequate living conditions, sanitary procedures, and created a space that met the needs of the surrounding community. In 1921, Greenwich House founded and developed a nursey school. The nursey school was created mostly to provide childcare and education for young children. During this period, there was an influx of woman that held jobs and needed childcare. Additionally, Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch is mentionable in her efforts in supporting the U.S. Housing Act of 1937, that promoted federal funding to low-income housing. Greenwich House was located at 26 Jones Street, New York, NY from 1902 to 1917. Currently, it is located at 27 Barrow Street New York, NY
