Red Hook Rise

1994 - present

Red Hook Rise is a non-profit organization that provides sports programs for young adults with a mission to provide organized sports to decrease crime. Started by Ray and Earl Hall, two brothers born and raised in Red Hook, Red Hook Rise was established to keep kids off the streets. Specifically, Red Hook has history embedded with crime linked towards the isolation and neglect from New York City. This dates all the the way back to the 19th century brawls between the Creekers and Pointers in the 19th century, two residential groups from different sides of Red Hook. Despite the ongoing organized crime in Red Hook, longtime residents like Ray and Earl Hall have taken it upon themselves to take back the neighborhood. Red Hook Rise was part of a wave of social services to take rise in Red Hook as an intervention for persistent crime. Red Hook Rise provides programs to intervene in adolescent crime like “Books and Basketball” that aims to increase literacy of students in Red Hook.
