Red Hook Community Justice Center
1909 - present
The Red Hook Community Justice Center is a multi-jurisdictional community court established 2000 in Red Hook. It was previously a Roman Catholic school called the Visitation Elementary School which shut down in the 1970s. The building was repurposed into the Red Hook Community Justice Center in 2000, after community advocates pressed the government to proactively address the ongoing crime in Red Hook. Its purpose is to provide citizens of southwest Brooklyn with the tools to respond to crime, provide social services, and reduce recidivism, especially among youth. They organized neighborhood safety initiatives and legal information sessions for New York City residents. One of their main goals is to provide alternatives to incarceration, especially through education and social services.. To do so, they provide community service opportunities, social services like anger management classes, and continuing education programs. This community justice center not only acts as a mediator between people and legislation but also an empowering tool for education and social justice in Red Hook.
