Promise Academy II
2004 - present
A part of Harlem Children’s Zone CEO, Geoffery Canada’s dream, Promise Academy II (PA II) is located in East Harlem, a prominent area filled with rich and diverse cultures . The school serves the purpose of giving, “cradle to career services to break intergenerational poverty.” The Harlem Children’s Zone has existed since 1970, although under a different name, Rheedlen Center, which was the first truancy prevention program in New York. Once Canada became CEO in 1990 he started the strategic 10 year plan to expand their one block that consisted of PS 198 (a center where parents and children could come together and practice holistic education) into a 100 block wide project to help end poverty in the area, which includes PA II. Created in 2004, it currently has a high population of minorities, specifically black and latinx populations making up 99% of the school's population. PA II provides a holistic approach to teaching, as well as educating parents in programs such as the baby college, where they are educated on early childhood development.
