CUNY Citizenship Now!
c. 2019 - present
In the office of Councilmember Francisco Moya, CUNY Citizenship Now! staff members sit with immigrants and their families to aid with citizenship applications. CUNY Citizenship Now! was founded by Allen Wernick, a professor of law at Baruch College in 1997. His program collaborated with different communities to host events that provided immigrants with free legal services with the goal of citizenship. The ethos of the program is to empower immigrants to have autonomy in their citizenship path. CUNY Citizenship Now! has helped thousands of families through the model of pro se, in which immigrants are able to represent themselves in court. Council member Franscisco Moya collaborated with Citizenship Now! in 2019 to bring their services to Corona and help the large, mainly Latino, immigrant community. The council member’s office continues to serve as a part-time location.
