People's Park
August 11, 1924 - present
The land for People’s Park was first acquired by the Department of Parks on March 5th, 1930. The empty plot was developed into a playground equipped with a wading pool, handball and basketball courts, and playground and gymnasium equipment. The playground opened to the public on August 11th of 1934 but received renovations the following year to replace the “antiquated and temporary types of shelter” initially put in place. The site quickly became home to several community events sponsored by the city government, such as daily kindergarten programs for preschool children and weekly meetings of dancing classes and the Mothers’ Club.
