Yeshivas Etz Chaim (Hebrew Institute of Boro Park)

1916 - 1978

Yeshivas Etz Chaim (HIBP) was the first Jewish day school in Boro Park. Schools such as HIBP set the standard for what dual-curriculum Jewish day schools would look like in the coming decades, a rigorous combination of Talmudic instruction alongside the standard general studies curriculum. At its heyday in the 1960s the school was home to more than 600 students with three parallel classes in each grade, but by its closing in 1978, it housed less than half of that number. What ultimately led to the closing of the school was the gradual departure of non-Hasidic Jews as more Hasidim moved into the neighborhood in the post-World War II decades. The building was sold and eventually demolished. What was once the school building is now home to retail space and a bank. Many notable people attended HIBP, among them Professor Alan Dershowitz.
