Staten Island Academy
September 05, 1884 - present
The Staten Island Academy was founded in 1884 when a group of educators and Anton Methfessel merged the Methfessel Institution and the original Staten Island Academy and Latin School. The Academy quickly gained national recognition for its progressive curriculum which allowed for prominent dignitaries, like members of the Vanderbilt family, Booker T. Washington, and George William Curtis (namesake to Curtis High School), to associate with them. In 1891, the school purchased land in St. George, Staten Island to accommodate the growing student population. Over the next 50 years, the Academy grew larger and eventually merged with progressive elementary institutions. Due to the expansion, the academy moved to their current Todt Hill location in 1964, where it remains today. The Staten Island Academy remains dedicated to their progressive curriculum and to the ideals of intellectual excellence, compassion, and creativity, while providing their students the tools to meet the unique challenges of the modern world.
