J.H.S. 127 John M. Coleman
1962 - present
The site of major activism in Ocean Hill Brownsville Strike. J.H.S. 271 was a chronically underserved school in Ocean Hill-Brownsville, serving students from the largely Black neighborhood. As part of a city-wide community control experiment, Ocean Hill-Brownsville operated with local control, an independently governed school district. However, after the removal of several teachers from JHS 271, the United Federation of Teachers went on strike across the city, shutting down schools throughout the fall of 1968. J.H.S. remained open, serving students throughout the strike. During the strike, the school sought to provide a culturally affirming education, including providing an afro-centric history, beginning the day with a rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" or the Black national anthem, the school also experienced intense union protests as well as requiring a police presence to escort students and teachers in and out of the school. Today it houses two charter schools, Eagle Academy for Young Men and Ocean Hill Collegiate Charter School.
