Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences

1881 - present

The Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences or Staten Island Museum began in 1881when a group of naturalists on Staten Island pooled their collections and research efforts together to create an educational space. Their goal was to preserve plants and animal species and advocate for environmental preservation. The institute became a public museum in 1908. Throughout the 20th century, the museum was instrumental in founding other institutions such as the Staten Island Zoo, the S.I. Historical Society, the S.I. Greenbelt, and the New York Botanical Garden. The original building in St. George was closed to the public and serves as storage for the museum's natural science collections. The museum reopened at its new location at Snug Harbor in 2015.
