Swiss Institute

1986 - present

The Swiss Institute was founded in 1986 by Swiss immigrants to create an "independent non-profit contemporary art institution dedicated to promoting forward-thinking and experimental art making through innovative exhibitions, education, and programs" (Swiss Institute, 2024). Swiss Institute is open to the public for free. Swiss Institute fosters an appreciation for emerging artists in various fields such as visual and performing arts, design, and architecture (Independent, 2024). Swiss Institute presented a solo exhibition by James Bantone that showcases a combination of sculpture and photography to challenge concepts related to gender and racial identities. The Swiss Institute's description of Bantone's exhibition includes Achille Mbembe's analysis of human subjectivity (The Swiss Institute, Offsite, 2024). Bantone's exhibition is called 202420242024 and it will be on view from March 15th till May 5, 2024. The second exhibition currently in view is Spora from May 10, 2023, to May 10, 2025, a curatorial initiative by a Swiss Institute to address environmental issues. This exhibition includes multiple artists such as " Jenna Sutela’s earth battery-powered oracle, Vivian Suter’s weather-exposed mural, Helen Mirra’s chance-determined background painting, a newly composed score as a large-scale mural by Raven Chacon inviting activation by passersby, and Mary Manning’s photographs merging private and public, natural and urban spaces" (This Swiss Institute, SPORA, 2024).
