Sheepshead Bay Library
1903 - present
On August 22, 1903, the original Sheepshead Bay Library opened, after area residents lobbied for their own branch and raised $200 as a down payment on its maintenance. Its current 7,475-square-foot location on East 14th Street is its fourth and has served the community since 1963. The Sheepshead Bay Library has a variety of program offerings. The library offers a weekly English Conversation Group for speakers of all levels and backgrounds as well as free ESOL classes for beginners learning English where they can improve their English and practice with other adults learning English. The library also offers free weekly homework help for students in grades K-8. In addition, the library offers Saturday Morning Storytime where children can hear things from folk tales, songs, and plays, to rhymes, and explore literacy, science, math, and history. The branch also offers famed talent shows, a monthly Russian literature club, weekly sewing classes, summer puppet shows, nutritious cooking classes for teens and annual library carnivals.
