Professional Children's School

1914 - present

From educating the children of Broadway and Vaudeville a century ago to educating wildly-diverse creative children today, the Professional Children’s School (PCS) has always had a unique mission: to educate children who are already professionals in demanding careers. Founded in 1914 by two reform-minded New Yorkers, PCS provides youth with flexible education opportunities aligned with their profession. In the early 1900s, the curriculum was light, requiring students to attend two hours daily. Currently, the school uses technology--Moodle, Google Chat, Skype--to keep its scholars on track academically. The school enrolls approximately 110 students, grades 6 through 12, excelling in social media, design, fashion, entertainment, sports, and the performing arts. Graduates include fashion designer Vera Wang, Actors Uma Thurman, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, and Christina Ricci, musician Yo-Yo Ma, and dancer Wendy Whelan.
