Yorkville Branch Library
1902 - present
Opened in 1902 at 222 East 79th Street, The Yorkville Branch of the New York Public Library was the first of 39 libraries built in the early 1900s with funds from Andrew Carnegie. In the 1950s, the Yorkville Library offered weekly stories and picture book hour sessions to children. For adults, the library offered a biweekly “exploring the American idea” book discussion group. The Landmarks Preservation Committee designated the Yorkville Branch Library a landmark in 1967. In 2024, the library has an upstairs level specifically designated for children with hundreds of books, smaller tables, a rug to read on, and computers. Downstairs is where you can find books more suited for adolescents and adults, tables, and desktop computers. Programs that are offered as of 2024 include: Yorkville Young Readers Book Club, Little Movers Storytime, Yorkville Writing Circle, and various Saturday afternoon movie showcases.
