Carl Schurz Park
1876 - ?
Carl Schurz Park, formally known as East River Park, was established in 1876. East River Park was designed by architect Samuel Parsons of Vaux & Parsons. Carl Schurz, a German migrant who served as a Union general in the American Civil War and later represented Missouri as the first German-American to serve in the United States Senate, was a distinguished and inspiring figure to the German community of Yorkville. In 1911, the park was officially dedicated to Carl Schurz. The park originally spanned from 84th street to 86th street until it expanded up to 90th street in 1891. The vast size of Carl Schurz Park makes it one of the city’s most dog-friendly parks with two dog runs that offer plenty of space for pups to run around and mingle. There is also a playground for kids of all ages, two basketball courts with five hoops in total, and four newly added pickleball courts as of October 2023.
