School in the Square
2016 - present
School in the Square (S2) was founded in 2016 by Evan Meyers. S2 emerged from a vision to inprove education in Washington Heights. Meyers was driven by the determination to improve the educational data seen within the NYC's public schools. He was assigned a principal apprenticeship in a district with a 25% graduation rate. In this position, Meyers witnessed firsthand the educational challenges that students and teachers were facing. Shocked by the reality that 73% of the students could not read at grade level and 50% of teachers abandoned the profession within a few years, Meyers took action. School in the Square is located at Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. The school was formerly known as Saint Spyridon School. After opening the their doors to middle school students, School in the Square has expanded to include two additional campuses. One focuses on elementary education, offering a bilingual Spanish and English Program, while the other serves as a high school. The high school is expected to open in the September 2024.
