Boys' High School
November 01, 1891 - 1975
This site was once known as the Boys’ High School, one of the earliest public High Schools available for young men in Brooklyn. This building was designed by Architect and superintendent at the time James W. Naughton. The school was known for education that centered on the study of classics and the humanities. Alumni include author Isaac Asimov, composer Aaron Copeland, and playwright Norman Mailer. Towards the end of its existence, the Boys’ School developed a reputation in the press for being rundown and dangerous. Despite its reputation for academics on the decline, the school was renowned for its sports, particularly its track team. In 1974-1975, its last year in operation, the Boys’ School welcomed 60 girls into its class. In 1975, the school became the Boys’ and Girls’ school, and moved locations to a new large, modern building on 1700 Fulton St, a 20 minute walk away. The original architecture of the Boys’ High School still stands today. The building hosts the smaller Brooklyn Academy High School, Uncommon Collegiate Prep Charter Middle School, and Uncommon Collegiate Prep High School.
