The Jewish Daily Forward

April 22, 1897 - present

The Jewish Daily Forward was founded by Abraham Cahan in 1897. The newspaper purchased the building on East Broadway in 1912. The Forward sought to educate Jewish and non-Jewish immigrants about socialism and the labor movement. The newspaper quickly became the most widely-read Yiddish newspaper in the world and the most important socialist daily publication in the United States. The Forward frequently set up fund raising drives to support striking workers. During election seasons, the Forward served as a partisan actor, actively campaigning for socialist candidates. As of 2023, the Forward's mission remained "to create a better-informed, more deeply engaged American Jewish community."
