Children’s Aid Society (James Children’s Society)

December 1855 - ?

The Children’s Aid Society James Children Center was located on 154 Hester Street. The center was also referred to or known as the Italian Children’s Center. The mission of this center was to serve as a recreational space for poor Italian children. The Children’s Aid Society James Children Center was founded in a space that previously operated as a school. The space was converted to recreation space for activities and opportunities for children in need. Serving both boys and girls there was a plethora of different activities and recreation available. Including the implication of clubs, vocational training, and recreational spaces. The James Children’s Center opened a playground in 1931 that served the surrounding area. The James Children’s Center is no longer in existence and the Children’s Aid Society continues to serve the children and adults of the New York area.
