The Washington Market School
1976 - present
Since 1976, the Washington Market School has existed independently as a private preschool in the Tribeca neighborhood. Inspired by bringing artistic and creative learning to small groups of children, this charter school began with only 6 students in founder Ronnie Moskowitz’ private loft in the neighborhood. Like schools under similar missions, Moskowitz followed the educational practices of Dr. Maria Montessori, which focuses more so on children’s natural interests. Because of this, curriculum at this school has focused on things like drama, music, art, and dance. After outgrowing Moskowitz’ small loft, the school received a charter from the New York State Department of Education, which allowed it the freedom to open its first location on Hudson Street in 1988. Shortly after, the school opened a second location at Duane Street. These locations exist today.
