Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School 74

December 01, 1953 - present

During the "baby boom" period after World War II, Junior High School 74 was constructed in response to the overcrowding in neighboring elementary schools such as Public Schools 26, 46, and 162, which were forced to operate in split sessions. The plan was announced on December 26th, 1951 and cost about $2.7 million. Almost two years later on December 1st, 1953, the school building opened and welcomed about 1,600 students from Kindergarten- 8th grade. In September 1954, the school became a Junior High School, only serving students in grades 6-8. In addition, the school served as an Evening Community Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The playground attached to the school is jointly operated with the Department of Parks and Recreation, demonstrating how the school has served as social and recreational hub throughout the decades since its opening. Today, the school still operates as a Middle School/Junior High School, serving about 1110 students in 6th-8th grade.
