St. Joseph's Academy

1917 - present

St. Joseph’s Parish was established in 1879 after another church was opened in Winfield (now Woodside), Queens. In 1880, the plot of land across from the parish on 43rd street was purchased by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Dominic to open an orphanage. Stemming from a need to educate the orphans they housed, St. Joseph’s Parish claims that their school opened in 1880, though the current school building was constructed in 1917. In 1907 the parish had buildings for the church, convent, and rectory along 30th Avenue, and while the addresses have not changed since 1907, the current building for the rectory was built in 1928 and the convent was built in 1938. While the building itself has been expanded (gaining a new wing in 1954), the class sizes have gone down exponentially. Currently, St. Joseph’s Academy has approximately 500 students from preschool through eighth grade compared to over 1600 in the 1950s.
