Dutch Kills School (P.S. 112)
1952 - present
Dutch Kills is a neighborhood within Astoria/Long Island City named for the Dutch word “Kill,” which translates to “little stream.” The area is named in honor of the 1643 Dutch settlement near that stream that was developed into farms during the 17th and 18th centuries. After the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation acquired this land in 1946 for a new playground, construction was delayed and it was eventually decided to open both a school and a playground at this site. P.S 112, the Dutch Kills school opened in 1952 for pre kindergarten and elementary school students. The accompanying playground, originally named Crescent Street Playground, opened in 1954 and included a Dutch decorated theme. It eventually was renamed Dutch Kills Playground in honor of the history of the neighborhood.
