Queens Public Library -Astoria Branch
1904 - present
The first Queens Library was opened on a subscription basis in 1858 in Flushing, and by the 1890s, it had become a free circulation library. At this time, other Queens communities had opened a total of seven local libraries, including the Astoria Branch, which was opened on February 28th, 1899 at 112 Fulton Avenue. Three of the seven libraries; Long Island City, Astoria, and Steinway, made up the Long Island City Public Library, which was chartered in 1896. The Queens Borough Public Library system as we know it today, was incorporated in 1907. After Andrew Carnegie donated $240,000 to the new library system, seven new libraries were constructed in the most populated areas of Queens, including the Astoria library, which opened in 1904 at 1401 Astoria Boulevard, where it still stands today.
