Muhammad's Temple of Islam #7
1956 - present
Muhammad’s Temple of Islam #7 was founded by Minister El Hajj Malik Shabazz (also known as Malcolm X) in 1956 at 102 W. 116th Street as the Nation of Islam’s mosque in Harlem. On February 21, 1965, the temple was destroyed after people who believed the Nation of Islam responsible for Malcolm X’s assassination fire bombed it. The entire top floor except Malcolm X’s office was completely demolished. Temple of Islam #7 was rebuilt by the community to include a house of worship, school, local businesses, and more. The mosque held youth training programs that addressed the academic and moral needs for children ages 3-18. Imam W. D. Mohammed renamed the temple as Masjid Malcolm Shabazz in 1976 to honor Malcolm X. Today, the Masjid Malcolm Shabazz still stands with its unique green dome with the Clara Mohammed School.
