Goddard Riverside Community Center
1959 - present
In 1959, Goddard Neighborhood Center and the Riverside Community House merged to form the Goddard-Riverside Community Center. The consolidation of the two settlement houses was in response to plans for urban renewal on the city's Upper West Side and the massive changes it would bring to the city's West Side between 87th and 97th Streets. Goddard sponsored programs for children, teenagers, young adults, and senior citizens living in the area. These efforts took place at the community center on West 87th Street and at other locations, including nearby public schools and the center's 135 acre summer camp located in Rifton, New York. In operation today, the Goddard Riverside Community Center supports broad programming for neighborhood residents that includes music and art instruction, drug prevention, and youth participatory action research.
