New York Medical College and Hospital for Women

November 01, 1863 - 1918

The New York Medical College and Hospital for Women opened towards the end of 1863 after founder Clemence Sophia Harned Lozier persuaded the New York state legislature to grant a charter, with help from several women's rights groups and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The charter also allowed female students to attend clinics at Bellevue Hospital where they faced hostility from their male counterparts. In 1918, the college was dissolved by its president and board of trustees after women won the right to attend New York City municipal hospitals as graduate interns.
