Description The Jackson Square Branch of the New York Public Library was founded in 1879 and served as one of New York City’s first public libraries. Initially, it was founded by the New York Free Circulating Library and later transitioned to the corporate body of the New York Public Library. The purpose of the founding of this library was to supply all New Yorkers with the access to books. During this time, most libraries were private and used mainly for research. This provided an opportunity for people of lower socioeconomic statues and poor individuals to be able to lend and read books. . The library had a wide array of different books and that included books for young children. The Jackson Square Branch was located on 251 West 13th street, and ultimately close in 1967. The library building is now a private residential home.
